Yojiro Takita’s Departures

Classic Film Night

A Tokyo cellist, Diago, finds himself without work after the orchestra he plays for collapses. Feeling like a failure, he sells his expensive cello, and moves back to his home town.

Daigo sees a job advert for an agency working with “departures” and is hired on the spot. He later learns that he isn’t working for a travel agent but a funeral home;  The ad should have said “the departed”, not “departures”.

The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living
