Writing Sydney with Walter Mason: Numerical Street & Alphabetical Sydney

Tom Keneally Centre Event

In the final Writing Sydney for the year, Walter Mason talks to Hilary Bell and Antonia Pesenti about their illustrated books Numerical Street, a tribute to the vanishing little shops and businesses found in any Australian suburb, and Alphabetical Sydney.

These whimsically illustrated books will delight adults as much as children, being at once playful and sophisticated. Hilary’s humorous rhyming text perfectly complements Antonia’s illustrations that cleverly combine collage, photos and drawing with a sharp eye for detail.

While Alphabetical Sydney reflected one particular city, Numerical Street is a fond and nostalgic tribute to the shops and shopkeepers of cities, suburbs and regional towns all over Australia.
