The Floating Brothel

Over 200 women and girls arrived in Sydney in 1790 aboard the Lady Juliana, the first all-female convict ship which was called The Floating Brothel by some.

This classic documentary follows the lives of four female convicts who were among those rounded up from England’s prisons and sent out to Australia to keep the men from “gross indecencies”.

Rachel Hoddy, Ann Marsh, 11 year-old Mary Wade and Mrs Elizabeth Barnsley, a doyenne of the London crime scene, were able to turn their sentence of transportation into a passport for success in the harsh young colony.
