The Web Design meeting this month is all about sound and motion and how to put great multimedia on websites.
Steve South will first look at how HTML handles media files starting with the older HTML 4 tags <object> and <embed> and going to the new HTML 5 tags <video> and <audio>.
The group will consider how to set up the tags, vary such elements as the display size of the video, establish the video controls, and what can be done if they do not display as intended in the browsers. They will then look at the file formats and the media types that are used on the web. As different browsers like different files they will consider which browsers like what files.
Finally the group will look at four free programs: Movie Maker, Hamster Free Video Converter and Free Maker which edit and convert video files and Audacity which edits audio files. Each of these programs will be used to edit some videos.
Small is beautiful on the web but as good video eats megabits of data the group will explore how to change things like the aspect ratio, the video size, the frame rate and the bitrate to reduce file size while maintaining quality.
Steve has a few videos fresh from his camera to use during the meeting and if any members have some videos they are invited to bring them to the meeting as it may be possible to use them as well.
