Speaking of Music… Jazz & Democracy

Speaking of Music...
The Jazz & Democracy Project® (J&D) is a music integrated curriculum that utilizes jazz as a metaphor to bring American democracy to life.  Enriching the study and teaching of U.S. history, government, civics and culture, it inspires youth to become active, positive contributors to their communities.

Founder Dr. Wesley J. Watkins, IV believes that great jazz is high art and that engaging the jazz-as-democracy metaphor develops the interdisciplinary thinking, synthesis and analysis skills young people need to confront complex 21st Century challenges in creative ways.

Join ‘Dr Wes’ (as he is known to his students) as he explains how the jazz masters are practitioners of American democratic ideals, advocates for live jazz and jazz education in the classroom, and ponders how these ideas translate to the Australian experience.
