SCREENING: Romance with a Double Bass & Million Dollar Legs

Classic Film Night

In our last Classic Film Night for 2018, join us for a double feature of two classic short comedy films.

Romance with a Double Bass (1975) is based on a short story by Anton Chekhov. A bassist (John Cleese) shows up early for the betrothal ball of a beautiful princess (Connie Booth), and whiles away the time having a dip in the river. The princess is doing the same, unbeknownst to the bass player, but when their clothes are stolen, the bass player helps the princess to preserve her dignity by transporting her back to the castle in his bass case. t’s a wonderfully innocent romantic tale of two people in their birthday suits!

In Million Dollar Legs (1932), Jack Oakie, playing an American traveling salesman, convinces W.C. Fields, the president of mythical European country Klopstokia, that he could introduce his miniscule nation to the world and make a lot of money to boot, by sending a team to the Games. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, the Klopstokians are by nature the most amazing athletes on the planet. Either a masterpiece of absurdity or a triumph of satire, depending on your mood, but it’s one of the funniest movies ever made, and becomes even funnier with subsequent viewings.
