Meredith Burgmann asks ‘Why Aren’t We There Yet?’

Why aren’t we there yet with regards to women in politics?

Although we have a female Prime Minister, and have had five female Premiers – and many women cabinet ministers – why does Australia still have a society that dwells on the appearance and domestic arrangements of our female politicians?

Why does our “quality press” pose on-line questions about whether we approve of Kristina Keneally’s new hair extensions? Why are women still not equal? What are the real drawbacks for women politicians? Is it family – or is it blatant discrimination? Has the debate about quotas run its course?

Dr Meredith Burgmann doesn’t know all the answers but she certainly has opinions.
