Leigh Straw on ‘The Worst Woman in Sydney’

Known as ‘the Worst Woman in Sydney’, Kate Leigh was a brothel madam, sly-grog seller and drug dealer with around 100 criminal convictions to her name. Her notoriety has been popularised in Larry Writer’s book Razor and has loomed large in TV’s highly acclaimed Underbelly series.

Yet for many in her community, Kate Leigh was also a benevolent hero and matriarch who regularly gave money to needy families and supported her local community through the hard times of The Depression and war.
