Jean Renoir’s The Rules of the Game (La Règle du Jeu)

Classic Film Night

The Rules of the Game is a comedy of manners centring around a group of wealthy aquaintances and their servants who gather at a Marquis’ country château. As the decadent weekend progresses, various romantic flirtations and infidelities take place exposing some ugly truths.

Now considered one of the greatest films ever made, The Rules of the Game was met with hostility by its premiere audience and savaged by critics. It was even banned by the wartime French government for “having an undesirable influence over the young.”
