Join Jane Rawson in the Tom Keneally Centre for an engaging talk about writing family history, and why speculative fiction might be the best way to tell a factual story.
Jane’s speculative novel, From the Wreck, jumps off from the real-life story of her great-great grandfather, George Hills, who survived the sinking of the steamship Admella off the South Australian coast in 1859 by clinging to the partially submerged wreck for eight days. In Jane’s re-imagining of the wreck, George becomes obsessed with a fellow survivor, unaware that she is from another dimension and seeking refuge on earth.
This is a novel imbued with beauty and feeling, filled both with existential loneliness and a deep awareness that all life is interdependent.
