Jack Clayton’s The Innocents (1961)

Classic Film Night

Deborah Kerr stars as Miss Giddens, who comes to Bly Estate as the new governess to the niece and nephew of a wealthy bachelor following the untimely death of their former governess.

Her suave employer (Michael Redgrave), known only as ‘The Uncle’, instructs Miss Giddens that she is to accept complete responsibility for the children and is not to bother him with any issue that may arise.

Although things go well at first, Miss Giddens begins to suspect that the Estate is haunted after seeing several mysterious, shadowy figures and hearing unexplained voices. She tries to shield the children from the haunting, but her horror grows as she  comes to suspect that the children are in league with the ghosts, possibly even possessed by them.

The Innocents is adapted from the novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.
