European honeybee (Apis mellifera) populations across the world are in decline, with industrial agriculture, habitat destruction and climate change all taking a toll. In fact, Australia is now the only country that still has European honeybees living in the wild.
Without bees, we would lose approximately a third of the world’s food supply. Apart from providing honey for our breakfast tables, bees are used by the global agriculture industry to pollinate crops.
Australian scientist Dr Denis Anderson has discovered of one of the biggest threats to the honeybee, a deadly parasitic mite called Varroa destructor which has decimated bee populations across the world.
