Hal Ashby’s black comedy Harold and Maude tells the story of a young man obsessed with death and a 79-year-old high on life who fall in love. Rich boy Harold keeps staging elaborate suicide displays to get the attention of his mother, who keeps planning his future wives for him.
Obsessed with the trappings of death, Harold freaks out his blind dates and attends funerals, where he meets Maude.
Maude lives exactly as she pleases, infecting Harold with her carpe diem attitude. To the disgust of Harold’s relatives and the confusion of Harold’s psychiatrist, Harold falls in love with her. Maude teaches Harold a valuable lesson about making the most of his time on earth, freeing him from the inner demons of boredom and self-pity.
