Greg Clancy uncovers the little know story of Annette Wagner. Swiss-born and a world traveller, she was a fashion and beauty expert, a media identity on the ABC and commercial radio in Australia in 1938 and 1939 — and a Nazi spy.
Her access to public radio broadcasts to nationwide audiences gave her a secure channel to transmit coded messages and also assisted her in her more underhand activities.
Raised in England and married to a French colonial officer, Annette presented a very limited security risk and she had little difficulty blending into her new temporary home. Her two years in Australia were spent immersed in intrigue and shielded by a skilfully managed facade of deception.
