Ernst Lubitsch’s The Shop Around the Corner

Classic Film Night

The Shop Around the Corner stars Margaret Sullavan and Jimmy Stewart as shop employees who can’t stand each other but, without knowing it, are falling in love through their letters as anonymous pen pals.

Deftly directed by Ernst Lubitsch from a smart, funny script by Samson Raphaelson, The Shop Around the Corner is a romantic comedy in the finest sense of the term; sharp, elegant and unsentimental.

It has been remade twice as the musical In the Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland and, most recently as You’ve Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
