UTS microbiologist Dr Willa Huston joins us to talk about her work in helping to protect and save koalas from the threat of extinction.
Koalas with chlamydia are at risk of infertility, blindness, pneumonia and even death, and koala populations are threatened, especially in NSW and Queensland where the species is listed as ‘vulnerable’.
Existing antibiotics do not work in all cases and the metabolism of koalas is intolerant of many compounds.
However, Dr Huston has identified a chemical that paves the way for a new koala-specific antibiotic, and could be a vital element in the urgent quest to save koalas’ lives.
