Carol Reed’s ‘Odd Man Out’

Starring James Mason as IRA operative Johnny McQueen who, after breaking out of jail, botches a bank robbery to obtain funds for the IRA. The film follows Johnny, who is seriously wounded, as he staggers through the streets of Belfast.

Directed by Carol Reed two years before he made The Third Man, it is an excellent example of a suspense film / political thriller. Odd Man Out is at the heart of Harold Pinter’s play Old Times (the relevant sequence from which will be read after the screening).
