On Thursday 29 April 2021, we celebrated the renaming and refurbishment of SMSA’s Henry Carmichael Theatre with champagne and canapés followed by an informative lecture by Dr Lesley Scanlon. The lecture explored the life and achievements of Henry Carmichael – founder and guiding spirit of the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts, educational progressive, social reformer and wine grower.
The SMSA Board and staff took advantage of the quiet period during COVID-19 and over the summer to focus on the rejuvenation of one of our most important spaces – where we come together as a community to take part in SMSA talks, film screenings and events, and where we welcome our clients and the wider public through our Venue Hire arm.
The newly renovated Henry Carmichael Theatre, formerly known as the Mitchell Theatre, incorporates new seating, AV equipment and sound system, lighting, paint and a redesigned stage. It is a flexible and accessible space which can comfortably seat over 170 people and can accommodate hybrid events.
We look forward to welcoming our members and the public to our stunning new theatre over the coming months.
