I am almost finished Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith (aka, J.K. Rowling). It’ a mystery & crime novel about Cormoran Strike, a detective who used to be in the special forces. The story starts with someone sending his assistant a severed leg. The book explores Strike’s history, while he is struggling to solve the mystery and figure out who is trying to kill his assistant. This is the third book in the series, with the second novel, The Silkworm, being my favourite so far. I am really enjoying this series!

I really enjoyed Sidetracked by Henning Mankell, which is part of the Inspector Kurt Wallander series. An insecure man, Wallander frequently experiences some difficulty dealing with those in his life — his adult daughter, his Latvian girlfriend, his staff. The novel is set in modern Sweden, dealing with some truly horrific murders. From the start the reader knows who the murderer is, but the characters do not. The book also deals with bringing young girls into Europe, via Sweden, to enter the sex trade. Henning Mankell sadly died in early 2015, so I won’t be rushing to find the next in the series just yet — I don’t want to run out!

I am reading Hotel Du Lac by Anita Brookner. I was encouraged to pick up this book from an SMSA library display on the author, after she unfortunately passed away earlier this year. The main character is a romance novelist named Edith. Edith flees to the Hotel Du Lac in Lake Geneva, after being banished by her friends for having an affair with a married man. All alone and thinking about the mistakes she’s made, Edith begins to watch the hotel’s other tenants and make up stories about their lives. I am really enjoying it so far and like reading about Edith’s observations about the other patrons of the hotel.
