2014 in Review: The Year’s Best Books

The past 12 months have proved a great year for Australian writers on the international scene.

Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North took out the 2014 Man Booker Prize, while Lily Brett’s Lola Bensky was awarded the less well known but prestigious Prix Medicis Etranger in France.

Derek, our Saturday Library Officer, has put together a summary of best books of the year, drawn from the short-listed and winning fiction of 2014’s major literary awards and the Goodreads 2014 Choice Awards for all literature categories as voted by up to 40,000 readers.

  • Winners are shown in bold.
  • A call number has been provided for books held in the SMSA Library
  • Library release dates have also been given, for example “Jan 2015” means the book will be available in the “January New Books” release.

Library Christmas Hours, Upgrade & Temporary Relocation

After the normal Library closure over the Christmas period, we will be commencing a Library upgrade — replacing the carpet and freshly painting the walls, etc.

During this upgrade, the Library will temporarily relocate to the Tom Keneally Centre on Level 3, which open for normal Library hours from 5 January until the Level 2 Library reopens
