SMSA’s history book launched at Government House

Last Tuesday 24th September, over 180 members, guests, staff and board members came together at Government House in the presence of our patron Her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir, AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales to celebrate the publication of Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts: A History.

In her speech, Her Excellency acknowledged the significant role that the SMSA has played in the development of Sydney.

The Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts: A History is significant as it is the first detailed history written about the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts since its inception. It has encompassed much original research, drawing upon our own extensive records held at the State Library of NSW and in our own archives, as well as drawing on past research in the field.

The author, Garry Wotherspoon, is a former academic and former NSW History Fellow, whose books include Sydney’s Transport: Studies in Urban History and ‘City of the Plain’: a history of a gay subculture. He was awarded Australia’s Centenary of Federation medal for his work as an academic, researcher, and human rights activist.
