The Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts is the oldest operating School of Arts in Australia. Our members form a lively community that has existed since 1833.
We are a not-for-profit organisation, wholly owned by our members and are proud to have Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales as our patron.

Our History
Established in 1833, the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts is justifiably proud of our history.
Why 'Mechanics'?
The word 'Mechanics' in our name comes from the SMSA's roots in an adult education movement.

Governance
The SMSA is governed by our By-Laws, constituted by the Act of Incorporation 1886 and guided by our Charter.
